How Long Does a Spray Tan Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

If your last spray tan lasted three days and then disappeared in patches, I’m going to say something you might not love: it probably wasn’t the tan.

So, How Long Should a Spray Tan Last?

On average, a professional spray tan lasts:

  • 7–10 days with proper prep and aftercare
  • 5–7 days with average maintenance
  • 3–4 days if you ignore everything I tell you

Spray tans fade because your skin naturally sheds. Your entire body doesn’t shed at the same rate, which is why you’ll notice faster fading on:

  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Anywhere that experiences friction

That’s normal. Patchy fading isn’t.

Why Your Spray Tan Might Not Be Lasting

Here’s where most people go wrong.

1. You Didn’t Exfoliate Properly

A loofah doesn’t count. If you didn’t remove dead skin before your appointment, your tan is developing on skin that’s already halfway out the door. When that skin sheds, so does your color.

Use an exfoliating mitt. No oils. No sugar scrubs. Just water and friction.

 2. You Shower Like You’re in Lava

Very hot water dries out your skin and speeds up shedding.
Warm is fine. Scalding is not.

3.  You’re Rubbing Yourself Dry

Pat dry with a towel. Don’t aggressively buff yourself like you’re polishing a car.

Friction = faster fade.

 4. You’re Not Moisturizing After Your First Rinse

This one is huge.

Hydrated skin holds onto color longer. Dry skin flakes. Flakes take your tan with them.

Moisturize daily after your first rinse. Oil-free is best.

 5. You’re Swimming, Sweating, and Sitting in Sand All Day

Salt water, chlorine, and sweat are all exfoliants. That doesn’t mean you can’t live your life. It just means your tan will fade faster on vacation than it would at home.

A long-lasting spray tan isn’t luck.

It’s:

  • Proper prep
  • Correct processing time
  • Gentle shower habits
  • Daily moisturizing
  • And realistic expectations

When done properly, your tan should fade evenly, not in patches.
